Our Heritage

The foundation of Holy Family Polyclinic began on October 1, 2021, with the arrival of the first staff members who joined the Medical Mission Sisters in Kulmasa. Their arrival marked the start of a comprehensive public health initiative focused on engaging local communities and fostering healthier behaviors. Initially, the team included two community health nurses, a nutritionist, a driver, and an accountant. Despite challenges, such as housing concerns and community skepticism, the team persevered.

In November 2021, the team expanded with the addition of a midwife who immediately assisted with a delivery upon arrival. By December, a visiting Medical Officer began offering monthly mobile clinics. Outreach programs were conducted from the Sisters' residence at Jedo, with logistics stored in a 40ft container stationed by the parish house. Daily, the staff organized supplies and planned outreach activities, gradually increasing attendance at mobile clinics.

In February 2022, Medical Mission Sister Dr. Ursula Angelika Maier, a pediatric neurologist, began running specialty clinics for children with neurological issues every other month. Additional staff, including a second midwife, a nurse, a physician assistant, and a disease control officer, joined in the following months, strengthening the team’s capacity to deliver health services.

The completion of the 'Project Office' marked a turning point, allowing for centralized management of the public health program, women’s empowerment, and nutritional initiatives. Addressing malnutrition, a weanimix project was introduced, producing nutritional supplements for vulnerable children, pregnant women, and adults. As demand grew, community members increasingly sought services at the Project Office.

In late 2022, the team formally adapted office spaces to meet outpatient service needs. The public health office was converted into a consulting room, the administrator’s office into an antenatal care room, and the accountant’s office into a treatment room. With this setup, outpatient services were piloted successfully, seeing increased patient volumes by mid-2023. Although initially staffed for public health, additional clinical personnel were brought on to handle growing demand. By the end of 2023, the clinic expanded its operating hours to include both morning and evening shifts.

On September 30, 2024, Holy Family Polyclinic entered a new phase, marking three years since its inception. Starting from minimal resources in the Sisters’ temporary accommodations, the clinic has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare facility. The current structure, designed as the first phase of a planned expansion, prioritizes maternal and child health, general outpatient services, and minor surgical procedures. It includes a caesarean theater, emergency ward, x-ray and ultrasound services, laboratory, and pharmacy.

From an initial team of six, the clinic now boasts a workforce of over 40 professionals, including general nurses, midwives, laboratory scientists, radiographers, sonographers, anesthetists, a nutritionist, disease control officer, IT manager, procurement manager, accountant, health information officer, administrative manager, public health nurse, community health nurses, enrolled nurses, physician assistants, pharmacist, pharmacy technician, and support staff. The Holy Family Polyclinic stands as a testament to dedication, growth, and community-centered care, setting the stage for a promising future in healthcare service delivery.
